Our Story

‘Kimbia Bila Shaka’ is known as a professional race, a well-respected movement in Zanzibar.

Since 2019, the movement and race have strengthened local communities, fostering equity by continuous support and engagement, especially of young girls and women. For them to get out on the beaches and in the streets, doing exercise together, despite background, heritage and faith. In the light of UN’s sustainable development goals 2030 we are working and encouraging women and young girls to participate in ZANZI HALF each year, on equal terms with men and boys.

We strive to break down cultural barriers that prevent women and girls from participating in physical activities, free from judgement. Our goal is for them to claim their human right to move freely and empower themselves.

A movement and race which respectfully challenges traditional roles, supports education, interfaith exchange and importantly, supports better health services – both physical and mental – for YOUNG GIRLS and WOMEN in Zanzibar.

Achieve gender equality. Empower all women and girls!

Women and girls are at the very heart of the agenda in an acknowledgement that their participation is a crucial as a pre-condition and drivers for the achievement of the sustainable development, putting a strong emphasis on women´s role. But equality is only achievable if women and men work together.

Our aim is to support the women and young girls to grow their confidence, overcome shyness and lead them onto a path, for them, to believe in themselves. Not to mention, gain a better health and have a fun time together. ZANZI HALF ‘Kimbia Bila Shaka’ has succeeded and continues to spread the message of women empowerment, by our ongoing work with gender equity and proven results of 54% women participating in 2021 and 55% in 2020.

The initiative to set up a race for Gender Equality and Women Empowerment, supporting the women´s right agenda rose in 2018. As a collaboration between Upendo Women Empowerment and the Danish running community Right to Movement.
The overall aim of the first race was to gather women and men, arising from the very grass root foundation united in a movement which would translate into further action, transforming gender norms by challenging traditional roles and break down stereotypes by showing women and girls in active presence as agents of change and peace. Today the race is part of the social entreprise and movemnet ‘Kimbia Bila Shaka’. and built on innovative collaborations between different businesses, CSOs and NGOs all initiatives already existing in Zanzibar.

Together seeking to and aiming for the SDG’s:
Development, empowering, equality and improve health.
